Security with online genealogy

Your computer connected to the internet is potentially vulnerable to data theft.  Here's what you can do to protect information on your personal computer:

Windows: Use antivirus protection, such as F-Secure.
Consider using a more secure browser such as Firefox or Chrome instead of Internet Explorer.

Linux and Mac: See "All Operating Systems".

All Operating Systems: Use a router.
Use the software firewall included with your operating system.
Keep up-to-date with patches, especially security updates.
Update router firmware and use strong passwords for your router.
If you use a wireless router, make sure it is WPA encrypted.
Develop a secure password strategy.
Use sFTP or SSH to transfer files instead of FTP.  Use https when available.
